The Viral Prompt That Animates Your Instagram Photo (Built Entirely In Canva)

You've probably seen it already - a photo of an Instagram post, likes and comments and all, where something inside the image is quietly moving. Sprinkles pouring onto ice cream. Sauce dripping over food. It looks like a video edit. It's actually one Canva design and one AI prompt.

Quick one before you dive in: I'm thinking about creating a Canva Hacks "mini-course" for non-designers, showing exactly how I create viral posts like this one. Jump on the waitlist if you're interested — I'm curious to see if it's something worth creating for all of you!

You don't need a video editor for this one. You need Canva and ten minutes.

The trick is building the "fake screenshot" first - the static image that looks exactly like an Instagram post - and only animating the one element that needs to move. Here's the full build, step by step.
Step 1

Build The Post Frame

Open a blank Instagram Post (3:4) design in Canva. Take a screenshot of the likes, comments, shares, saves and first part of the caption from one of your real Instagram posts, then upload it and place it across the middle of the page. This is what makes the finished image read as a genuine screenshot instead of a graphic.
Step 2

Add Your Two Frames

Go to Elements → Frames and add a square frame. Enlarge it to cover the top section of your design, then duplicate the frame and move the copy to the bottom section. These two frames are where your before-and-after (or top-and-bottom) images will sit.
Step 3

Drop In Your Images

Upload your first image and drag it into the top frame - double-click it and enlarge it until it fills the frame completely. Repeat with your second image in the bottom frame.
Pro Tip
Keep the two images tightly cropped and framed the same way. The more consistent they look, the more convincing the final animation.

Step 4

Remove The Background On Your Pour Shot

Upload the original pouring image (the sprinkles, sauce, or liquid you want to animate), place it over the full design, then go to Edit → Background Remover. This isolates just the pouring element so it can sit on top of the rest of the design.
Step 5

Flatten It And Animate

Download the completed design as a PNG, then upload it back into Canva. Select the image and go to Edit → Image to Video. Paste in this prompt:
Prompt
"Animate only the [top image liquid ie. sprinkles], across the scene and down the existing stream onto the [bottom image item ie icecream]. Make it move slowly and realistically, spreading slightly over the [bottom image item ie hand and cone]. Keep the objects, Instagram interface, text, icons and tiled background completely still. Do not add, move or distort anything else."

Swap the bracketed parts for whatever you're actually pouring and onto what. The instruction to keep everything else "completely still" is what makes the post itself look untouched while only the one element moves.
Real Talk

One photo. One prompt. A scroll-stopping post.

This is one trick, but it points at something bigger - you don't need filming skill, editing skill, or expensive software to create content that stops people mid-scroll anymore. You need to know which prompt to use and when.
