Stop asking your friends if your idea is good. Look for these 6 signals instead.

The free checklist to help you figure out if your digital product idea has real potential BEFORE you spend weeks creating it. By Lauren Dallas

YOUR FRIENDS ARE NOT YOUR MARKET RESEARCH.

I hate to break it to you, but your best friend saying "OMG, I would totally buy that!" is not a business strategy. πŸ˜‚

One of the biggest mistakes I see people make when starting a digital product business is creating something they THINK people want.

They spend weeks designing the perfect eBook, template or course, only to launch it and hear… crickets. πŸ¦—

The problem isn't always the product. It's that they skipped the research.

Before you open Canva and start creating, let's look at 6 signals that can help you determine whether your idea is worth pursuing.
SIGNAL 01

People are already searching for a solution.

If people are actively Googling, searching TikTok or asking questions about the problem your product solves, that's a promising sign.

Your reality check: Search your topic on Google, Pinterest or TikTok. Are people looking for answers, tutorials or recommendations?
SIGNAL 02

People are already paying for something similar.

Competition isn't necessarily a bad thing. It can be evidence that a market exists.

Your reality check: Search Etsy, Gumroad or other relevant marketplaces. Can you find comparable paid products with credible signs of customer interest?
SIGNAL 03

Your product solves a specific problem.

"Helping people improve their lives" is vague.

"Helping busy mums create a weekly meal plan in 15 minutes" is specific.

The clearer the problem, the easier it is to communicate why someone might need your product.

Your reality check: Complete this sentence:

"My product helps solve so they can __."
SIGNAL 04

People are complaining about the problem.

Complaints are clues!

When people repeatedly say "I wish there was an easier way to…" or "Why is this so complicated?" you might have found a problem worth solving.

Your reality check: Explore Reddit threads, reviews and comment sections. What frustrations keep coming up?
SIGNAL 05

The outcome is worth paying for.

People don't just buy PDFs. They buy what those PDFs can help them achieve.

Think about whether your product saves time, reduces stress, teaches a valuable skill or helps someone achieve a meaningful result.

Your reality check: Ask yourself, "What changes for someone AFTER using my product?"
SIGNAL 06

You can clearly identify WHO would buy it.

If your target audience is "everyone," your messaging will probably connect with no one.

You need to know who has the problem, why it matters to them and where they're already looking for help.

Your reality check: Describe your ideal buyer in one sentence, including the problem they're trying to solve.

THE PRODUCT IDEA SCORECARD

  • I've found people actively searching for a solution.
  • I've found evidence of people buying similar products.
  • My product solves one clear, specific problem.
  • I've seen people discussing or complaining about this problem.
  • My product offers an outcome people may value enough to pay for.
  • I know exactly who my ideal customer is.

YOUR SCORE

01

5–6 points: Looking promising! πŸ’š

You've found several encouraging signals. Your next step is to test whether your specific offer appeals to potential customers.
02

3–4 points: More detective work needed. πŸ•΅οΈβ€β™€οΈ

Your idea might have potential, but there are gaps in your research. Focus on gathering evidence for the signals you're missing.
03

0–2 points: Don't open Canva just yet. πŸ˜‚

That doesn't mean your idea is bad! It means you need more information before investing time in creating it.
