How To Recreate The Viral Instagram "Pop-Out" Trend In Canva ๐Ÿ“ฑโœจ

You've probably seen this trend all over Instagram โ€” a creator appears to literally pop out of their Instagram Story bubble and feed post, creating a fun 3D effect. The best part? You don't need complicated editing software to recreate it. You can make the entire thing inside Canva using screenshots, frames and Background Remover. Here's exactly how.

Two screenshots, one photo of yourself, and Canva's Background Remover do all the heavy lifting.

The illusion comes from layering a background-removed cut-out of yourself directly over a framed version of the same photo, so part of your body appears to cross outside the frame. Thirteen small steps, broken into five phases, here's the full build.
Phase 1

Set Up Your Screenshots And Canvas

Open Instagram and take two screenshots: the Stories row at the top of your Home feed, and the top section of the Reel or carousel post you want to feature. These create the realistic Instagram interface behind your design. Then open Canva, create a blank Instagram Post or Carousel page, and upload both screenshots along with the photo of yourself you want to use for the 3D effect.
Phase 2

Build The Story Bubble

Place your Stories screenshot at the very top of your design and resize it so it sits naturally across the page, just as it would in Instagram. Select it and go to Edit โ†’ Magic Grab, then select one of the Story profile circles and separate it from the screenshot, this creates an empty space for your own image. Clean up anything left behind (shadow, colour, background) using Tools โ†’ Draw โ†’ Pen with a white pen colour, until the area looks completely clean. Then go to Elements โ†’ Frames โ†’ Circle, add a circular frame, and position it exactly where the original profile appeared - match the size and placement as closely as possible. Drag your chosen photo into the circle and double-tap to reposition or resize until you're happy with it.
Key Milestone
You've now recreated the Story profile. The next step is where the effect actually comes to life.
Phase 3

Create The First Pop-Out Effect

Duplicate the same photo you just used, select the duplicate, and go to Edit Photo โ†’ Background Remover. You'll now have a cut-out version of yourself with no background. Make this version slightly larger and position it directly over your circular frame and line the two versions up, but let part of your body extend outside the Story circle. That overflow is what creates the 3D illusion: your photo should look like you're physically stepping out of your Story.
Phase 4

Build The Post Pop-Out

Place your post screenshot directly underneath the Stories section, resizing and positioning it so the two screenshots flow together like your actual feed. Go to Elements โ†’ Frames โ†’ Square, position the square frame over the image area of your screenshot, and drag the same photo into it then double-tap to adjust the crop and positioning. Duplicate your photo again, run it through Edit Photo โ†’ Background Remover, then resize the cut-out and position it directly over the framed version. This time, let part of your body extend outside the edges of the post itself: hands, hair, arms or legs crossing the boundary is what sells the illusion.
Phase 5

Group And Animate

Once everything is perfectly aligned, select your circle frame and cut-out photo together and click Group, this keeps them moving together without ruining the positioning you've just created. Select the grouped Story element and go to Animate, then experiment with different animation styles until you find one that makes your profile look like it's popping, sliding or moving out of the Instagram interface. Repeat the process with the larger post image for even more movement.
Real Talk

Alignment is everything.

Choose a photo where your body has a clear silhouette and isn't cropped too tightly - poses with arms, hands, hair or legs extending outward work especially well, because you have something obvious to bring outside the frame. Your framed image and background-removed cut-out should line up almost perfectly; if they're even slightly misaligned, you'll see a duplicate edge and the 3D illusion won't hold up. Once everything's lined up, you've got your own version of the viral pop-out trend - built entirely in Canva.
